This accessory dwelling unit sits behind the main house on a hilly site. It has a deck and private bedroom.
The private garden allows for full use of this backyard space.
The exterior deck to the south allows for more space and nice views of the downtown sunset.
Theinterior uses hardwood flooring and a vaulted ceiling for even daylight throughout the daytime.
On this hilly site, the new ADU is at the back.
The interior main space has a tall vaulted ceiling to bring in more natural light and make this small space feel more spacious.
The exterior is simple cement board siding with a a tall roofline. Altough small, the bathroom is sizable and ample.
The stucco has been applied, the new roof installed and patio cover has begun. There will also be a wooden deck in the front of the house which will be installed next.
Current progress shows the framing and sheathing are complete. Next steps are the roofing and the rough plumbing and electrical phase.
This plan diagram shows the relationship and function of the oversized roof. As the surface undulates, opens and closes, the roof mediates the solar exposure throughout the day as the sun changes position in the sky.

We are very excited about the roof on this extraordinary house. The building elevations show how the surface of the undulates over the building to allow light to penetrate the interior space evenly throughout the daytime hours.
The roof is shaped in response to the path of the sun and the requirements of the project. We need to cover the guest house, the two decks and the carport. We decided to design a single roof to do the one job.
This is the back of the property where we will be building the new guest house.
This project is to build an accessory dwelling unit on top of the existing garage, we will also install an new hardwood deck and trellis in the backyard of the existing house.
The flooplan of the ADU is configured with window openings to allow the most natural daylight into the new space, as possible. This single-room studio will feature a bathroom, a small kitchen and a vaulted ceiling.
The second floor dwelling unit is a simple form, floating over the existing garage, with a gable roofline. Most of the windows are on the south and west to allow for natural daylight to illuminate the space evenly, throughout the daytime hours.
The modest sized dwelling unit of 365 square feet, the windows open to the south to allow for the most daylight into the space. Upon entering the second floor space, there is a closet, a kitchen, a bathroom with a large shower, with a floating vanity with a clothes hamper. The main living space has ample space for sleeping and living.
This modest, Spanish-Mission Style home in Eagle Rock, needs a little more space. We have designed the remodel, which shows a larger bedroom and bathroom at the front of the house. We will be using clay tiles and casement windows to match the existing aesthetic of the original house. At the back of the property, we are adding a second floor over the garage for a work studio with a bathroom.
The second floor studio space is designated as an ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT, located atop the existing garage in the back of the property it is being conceived as a simple, modern extension to the white stucco garage building. This is the first step of the ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT or “ADU”. The project will add a second floor to this existing 2-car detached garage in Eagle Rock. All of the exterior walls will be maintained, then new framing will be installed to support the new second story with a kitchen and bathroom.
